If you’re a contractor or freelancer, you already know that recruitment can be messy. Long processes, unclear feedback, and sometimes clients who simply don’t “get” the value of flexible workers.
Now, a UK Hiring Taskforce is working with government to overhaul hiring completely. The goal? To make UK recruitment the fastest, fairest, and safest in the world.
And at the heart of this shake-up? The death of the CV.
The problem with CVs
CVs have been around since the Middle Ages (literally), and yet they’re still the go-to tool for recruiters in 2025. The trouble is:
- 60% of CVs contain errors.
- 41% of new hires quit within 12 weeks (CIPD, 2024).
- It takes 44 days on average to make a hire.
That’s a lot of wasted time and energy, and for contractors, delays in hiring mean lost contracts, missed income, and poor client matches.
AI is making things worse
AI has now entered the CV game — and not always in a good way.
- A Hiscox study in 2025 found that 1 in 2 job seekers used AI to write their CV.
- Other research puts the number even higher at 61%.
The result? A battle of bots. Jobseekers use AI to polish or even invent CVs, while employers use AI to filter them. The outcome often feels meaningless. For contractors, who rely on skills, projects, and track record, the CV has become even less relevant.
Why the CV is on its way out
We’ve had attempts to move beyond CVs before, like competency-based hiring and skills-based assessments, but change has been slow.
This time is different. With digital checks (such as HMRC confirming work history) and platforms like LinkedIn showing real-time profiles, the traditional CV is quickly becoming redundant.
Instead, new approaches are taking hold:
- Skills assessments that prove what you can actually do.
- Online profiles that show contracts, testimonials, and portfolios.
- Digital credentials (even blockchain-backed) to verify your career history.
For contractors, this is good news. It means less box-ticking and more focus on what really matters: skills, independence, and value delivered to clients.
Simple guidance for contractors & freelancers
So, what should you do while CVs fade away?
- Polish your online presence – Keep LinkedIn, portfolio sites, and contracting profiles up to date. These are increasingly replacing the CV.
- Highlight skills, not just history – Clients want to know what you can do now, not what you did ten years ago.
- Collect testimonials – Endorsements from past clients carry more weight than bullet points on a CV.
- Stay adaptable – Be open to digital hiring tools like skills tests or credential checks, they could actually speed up contract offers.
- Don’t rely on AI too much – A polished profile is good, but authenticity matters. Agencies and clients can spot generic, AI-padded text.
The future of hiring for contractors
Imagine applying for a contract and getting a decision in 10 days instead of 44. That’s the vision behind the government’s hiring overhaul.
It won’t happen overnight, but the trend is clear: CVs are fading fast, and digital-first hiring is here to stay.
For contractors and freelancers, this could mean less admin, faster contracts, and a fairer system that values your skills and independence over how slick your CV looks.
